The Multicultural Commons
The newest addition to the Social Justice & Equity Center, the Multicultural Commons serves as a social hub where students of BIPOC identities can find solidarity with fellow BIPOC community members. This multi-functional space is designed to provide students a specific location where they are able to be their most authentic selves without fear of judgment. While community members are welcome, the Commons is centered on the BIPOC experience and strives to be a safe space for our growing community.
Advocacy and Education
The SJEC Racial Justice Team is dedicated to creating a space that is supportive of SOU community members of all backgrounds. We chose to approach our mission with a lens of equity and inclusion, recognizing that some communities come from cultures that have been historically underrepresented and marginalized. To this point, we offer referral services and other resources to assist in the dismantling of oppressive systems and barriers that hinder the full engagement of members of the SOU community.
The Equity Coordinator for Racial Justice serves as a Confidential Advocate. Confidential Advocates offer complete confidentiality and will provide options, without triggering further actions, that allow you time to make the decision you deem fit for yourself. Please contact Marvin Woodard at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are in need of specific advocacy.
The SJEC Racial Justice Team frequently collaborates with the Office for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, who works to ensure equitable access to opportunities, benefits, and resources for all faculty, administrators, students, and community members. If you would like to learn more about the work conducted by the Office for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, visit their page.
